How To Help Your Child Develop A Healthy Self-Esteem

The childhood years can be a time of preparation for children. It is the time when they learn beginning skills and practices, which may better prepare them for the things ahead. As a child goes through different milestones, parents need to take steps so that a child can develop a healthy self-esteem.

Self-esteem is a person’s overall evaluation of his worth, and it has a great impact on whether a person is more likely to succeed in life. Developing one’s self esteem is a lifelong process, but parents need to set the right foundation early on. With an optimal environment for growth, a child may be able to develop a healthy self-esteem necessary for the attainment of his goals in life.

For children to have a healthy self-esteem, they need to feel that they have a place in the family. Make sure that your child feels that he is loved and respected. He should clearly feel that he is loved for who he is, and not because of what he does. Try to come up with fun ways, on how you can make your child feel special. Always praise your child for his good behavior, and avoid making comments that will ridicule or shame your child.

It is vital that parents spend quality time with children. Make time for family bonding activities, and make sure that you have meals together. Give them your undivided attention, especially when they need to share certain matters with you. You may also encourage your kids to join clubs, or to participate in a particular sport. This will provide an opportunity for your child to feel accepted by his peers.

A healthy self-esteem may also result from a child’s confidence to tackle new tasks. Try to provide activities for your child that can promote learning. Make sure that the activity is age-appropriate, and allow him ample time to finish the task. If he encounters difficulties, reassure your child that learning new skills may take some time. Encourage him do more practice, and praise him for any improvements. Be supportive, but do not attempt to do the task for your child. Allowing him to accomplish tasks on his own, may give him the confidence to develop new skills in the long run.

It is also important for parents to encourage cooperation within the family. Make sure that there is an opportunity for everyone, to contribute to the family as a whole. This will enhance your child’s feelings of belonging, and it may also strengthen his self-esteem. Setting rules can be helpful in making limits known, but it can also give a child an exposure to order and ritual.

Assign chores appropriate for your child’s age, and expect accountability in older children. It is also important that you show appreciation when your child does an assigned task properly. By allowing your child to do things for the family, it may also prepare him to work effectively with other people later on.

There will surely be challenges ahead, but with a healthy self-esteem, a child can better withstand the trials. When a child believes in his own capabilities, he can grow up believing that he can tackle almost anything.
