I have taught autistic children and tho it has it challenges, it is very rewarding. They have a very strong will that if you can focus it, the results are outstanding. I liken it much the same as teaching ADD children in that if you focus their energy, their intelligence shines through.

Mostly I learned about vaccines and I think that Jenny McCarthy also did a “great job” on CNN Larry King when she confronted the doctors. We should do all we can to save the environment but also do more to save our children and animals. The puzzle piece could make a beautiful piece of art if all connected.
Thanks.

I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THS HAPPENS
April 8th, 2008 at 7:04 am

This is a fabulous thing you are doing — thank you. When I visited the site, I learned that while it used to be around 3, new research and developments are allowing autism to be spotted as early as 6 months. I had not heard that they could potentially spot early signs in a baby so young. Hopefully this will be a positive step towards early intervention and more positive outcomes. Thank you for drawing attention to this and for the great contest/giveaway.

How critical it is for parents to watch for early signs because pediatricians often just feel if a child is a little behind, he will just catch up. The critical need for interventions in the early years seems to make a tremedous difference in the amount of progress of the child. Don’t know the cause; don’t have a cure….

My son has severe ADHD, though it is different than autism I can relate to these parents and I do have friends with autistic children. Patience is what parents learn. My heart goes out to all affected and pray there is a ‘cure’ sooner than later.

I was a daycare provider for 5 years. I had a little boy from the time he was 6 weeks old until he was nearly 5 years old. He was diagnosed with Autism when he was 18 months old. I watched him go from a “normal” little boy happy and playful to a reclusive child. His first word was “yellow”. When he turned 19 months, his speech and everything else began to decline. I loved him as if he were my own. He taught me patience and understanding and I still love him and stay in touch with his family.

What a wonderful contest! I thank you for having it. I have a form of Autism called Asperger\’s Syndrome and wish everybody knew more about Autism. I don\’t agree that vaccines cause Autism, but it\’s still important that it is diagnosed early. Once diagnosed, measures such as speech therapy and social skills classes can help. April 13th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Asperger’s Syndrome is different than classic autism in that IQs are normal. people with Asperger’s syndrome can be fixated on one thing. When my cousin’s son who has AS went on a factory tour he fixated on the numbers on the overhead cranes and nothing else. It was exhausting just helping his mom keep him in tow because he is easily distracted and gets lost because he doesn’t focus on faces so follows anyone with his mom’s coat color.

How many people it affects
April 13th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Though the debate over the role that vaccines play in causing autism grows more heated every day, researchers have still not found a definitive link between the two.

In reading about the early warning signs, I learned that
“No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six months or thereafter” is one of the red flags.
April 13th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
The fact that the autism spectrum affects 1/150 children is astounding; that fact alone thrusted me into reading more about the different forms and the co-morbidity (and go more in depth!)

My six year old granddaughter with Autism is the most beautifull girl in the world.Everything she speaks is truth so everything she says is right from the heart. She does not know a lie or why say one.It just makes her a truly beautifull little girl that I love from the bottom of my heart. My seven other grandchildren I love but Jadis is special.

Thank you for helping people get and stay informed with autism. They have a great program called “AutismCares”. It is “a consortium of organizations including Autism Speaks, that has come together to support individuals with autism and their families during natural disasters and other catastrophic life events. Learn how families get help.” Many families were able to be helped with this during Hurricane Katrina.

Adolescence is when, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, they “may become painfully aware that they are different from their peers,” a realization they may not be fully prepared to face. As a result, they may appear to regress, acting out and exhibiting behaviors, such as hitting or rocking, they may have conquered long ago.

I learned that although autism is such a common disorder, there are ways to help children with autism and we will find more ways by spreading awareness
April 13th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
I didn’t know it was more common in boys than in girls.
April 13th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
I learned that there is no single treatment protocol for all children with autism.
April 13th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
I had no idea that Autism affects more children than diabetes, aids and cancer together. It’s so very sad and I feel for the families that have to deal with this.
April 13th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
I have an 8 year old nephew who is Autistic. My 6 year old son sometimes has a hard time understanding why his cousin can’t talk and doesn’t always want to play with him. I found a great book, “Since We’re Friends”, that will be perfect for me to read to him. Thanks for making donations to this worthy cause for each comment posted!

I didn’t know that they could detect autism at such an early age now.
I used to watch a little boy that probably had autism (he hadn’t been officially diagnosed but he had a lot of the symptoms) and he was a sweet boy. Just got a little frustrated sometimes.

I have Aspergers Syndrome
April 14th, 2008 at 12:55 am
I was unaware that HYPER seratonin levels were present in persons with autism. The person who decided upon the puzzle piece for a symbol was clever!

April 14th, 2008 at 7:18 am
Everybody should learn more about autism. I also believe they are from vaccinations. It is sad. The goverment should look into the vaccination theory.
April 14th, 2008 at 7:22 am
I think the vaccinations should be investigated as well. Maybe they are to blame.
April 14th, 2008 at 7:48 am
There are no effective means to prevent autism, no fully effective treatments, and no cure.
April 14th, 2008 at 7:50 am
I had no idea that the signs of autism were so general. That if a baby doesn’t smile by 6 months that it could be a sign. It was an eye opener for me. I don’t really know anyone with autism and it was interesting to learn new information about it.
April 14th, 2008 at 8:09 am
Today, 1 in 150 individuals is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined.

April 14th, 2008 at 9:39 am
doctors think that kids will “catch up” and for parents to “wait and see”… but when parents see signs in their children they need to see about getting them checked b/c the sooner the diagnosis the better.
April 14th, 2008 at 9:42 am
What a noble cause! I learned that there is a walk benefitting autism research in my area on Oct. 21st. I’d love to get involved as there is so much to learn and do.
April 14th, 2008 at 10:09 am
More boys are affected by autism more than girls.
April 14th, 2008 at 10:49 am
I did not know how much more likely it was to strike boys than girls. Thanks for the info.

April 14th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Lets face it strides are being made in the field of autism research; however we are still in the prehistoric era of this developmental disease/ As a therapist who has worked with autistic children, two friends who each have one autistic child each; we have not doen anything except for npotism to the families, therapy intervention stragtegiests with more team approaches needed for each autistic individual. Many Thanks

I thought my son was a little behind, but he has passed the “milestones” on the website, that I feel a little better.
April 14th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
From the website “Autism Speaks”, I learned that there are different spectrums of autism that range to high functioning as in “Asperger’s Syndrome”.
April 14th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
Children with autism are often easily distracted. They also tend to have behavioral issues in school. I actually interned in some elementary schools one in which I helped a student who was autistic. He was the smartest 1st grader I’ve ever met, but he was always getting in trouble at school
